Nicole Camille Escovedo was born in Berkeley, California, on September 21, 1981. Her biological parents were Peter Michael Escovedo, a member of Lionel Richie's band and brother to '80s pop percussionist Sheila E., and an anonymous backstage assistant.
When Nicole was 3, Lionel and his wife Brenda Harvey-Richie informally adopted her and raised her as their daughter. When she was 9, they went through the legal formalities of the adoption; she still speaks with her biological mother who is also of Afro-Hispanic extraction and currently resides in the Dominican Republic.
A year later, Lionel and Brenda split, and in their guilt over the separation, "Their way of making me happy was to say yes to everything I wanted, but I don't think a little girl should have that much freedom," said Richie in an interview with Vanity Fair magazine. She used marijuana, cocaine, and heroin, was arrested three times, and was involved in five car accidents. Not until she went into drug rehabilitation in 2003 did Richie and her parents have an open conversation about her addiction. "I'm now, at 24, just learning to deal with my problems instead of concealing them with drugs," she said in the interview.
Nicole Richie has studied the guitar cello, violin, piano, and figure skating, and has plans to pursue a music career. She also attended the University of Arizona to study Arts and Media for two years after graduating from high school. God Father Quincy Jones said in a Dec 15th, 2006 People Magazine interview that he has "known her since she was a baby. She's a very smart girl. When she was younger she worked eight hours a day for eight years to become an Olympic figure skater. She's a very talented girl."

There are plenty of privileges to being raised in affluent circles. Nicole's formative years were spent at Los Angeles' prestigious Buckley School, where she met and befriended Paris Hilton, the heir to the Hilton empire. But money is also often synonymous with the fast lane, and as a teenager Nicole began partying hard and experimenting with drugs and alcohol. Following her high school graduation in 2000, she decided to go to college.
She enrolled in the University of Arizona, the same school as pro basketball player Luke Walton and actress Heather Blair. Nicole dropped out after two years.
Nicole Richie got arrested
At this point, with the influences of her youth still fresh in her mind, Nicole decided to become a musician. She founded the rock band Darling with model Josie Maran and socialite sisters Soleil and Sofia Alberti. On her own and on the loose, Nicole never broke out of the pattern of her teenage years. In February of 2003, the police pulled her over in Malibu. She was questioned and it was soon discovered she was driving with a suspended license. Upon searching her Mercedes-Benz, police found heroin in the car and Nicole was immediately arrested. She later plead guilty to all charges. Nicole was sentenced to probation and ordered to attend a drug rehabilitation program.
Nicole Richie lives the simple life
Nicole was first signed on to The Simple Life as a replacement for Paris' sister Nicky, who was approached by FOX executives, but wasn't interested in participating. The show aired in December of 2003 and was successful enough to justify two sequels (so far...): The Simple Life 2: Road Trip and The Simple Life 3: Interns.

The fame that The Simple Life earned her allowed Nicole to branch out. She made appearances on such shows as Eve (starring rapper Eve), Punk'd, Rock Me Baby, and MADtv. She was cast alongside Julie Bowen in Kids In America, and is still working on breaking into the music industry. Living drug-free in Los Angeles, Nicole has been romantically linked to Elijah Blue Allman. In February 2005, it was announced that she is engaged to disc jockey Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein.

Nicole Richie Confirms Pregnancy Rumors

The daughter of singer Lionel Richie and girlfriend of Good Charlotte's Joel Madden, 28, confirms she is pregnant. Richie, 25, also talks about her sentencing last week on a DUI charge to four days in jail, a $2,048 fine, three years of probation and a drug and alcohol course.
"I'm almost four months." Richie tells ABC News' Diane Sawyer for an interview to air this week that she is almost four months' pregnant and that her boyfriend, Good Charlotte frontman Joel Madden, is the father.
Nicole feels sorry for drunk driving. Pleads Guilty. "I have a responsibility and it's something that I did wrong, and if I could personally apologize to every single person who has lost a loved one from drunk driving, I would. Unfortunately, I can't, but this is my way of paying my dues and taking responsibility and being an adult."
Nicole and Paris Shops, riding a School Bus

After reuiniting and putting everything in the past. Nicole Richie and Paris Hilton's Dynamic Duo adventure continues. Instead of shooting for "Simple Life - Season 5" they went shopping using a school bus that was supposed to be used for camping. They abandoned the kids and took the bus from Camp Shawnee to West Hollywood's Robertson Boulevard. A source said: "The girls arrived at the Kitson boutique in the big yellow school bus driven by a really hunky driver. "You would never normally see a school bus driver that hot! "Paris and Nicole were filming for the show, but happily signed autographs for a group of fans between takes."

Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie as we all know were friends before they had their feud. They party together alot. Each of them had their law breaking moments. DUI not to mention, which also caused delay for the production of Simple Life Season 5. Simple Life (A reality show in which two wealthy individuals, heiress Paris Hilton and Lionel Richie's daughter Nicole, are pulled from the luxury they are accustomed to and thrown in with a small town family and forced to live and work as they do to make ends meet.) gave them a lot of adventure together, doing particular tasks with different people or families with different lifestyle. Now Simple Life is on it's fifth Season and both stars agreed to shoot the season together after sorting out their differences , putting aside evrything in the past. Their task? Leading campers through fitness sessions, couples counseling, drama lessons and beauty-pageant preparations _ and surviving without cell phones.
