    Biography

JoJo's birth name is Joanna Noëlle Levesque, she was born on December 20, 1990 , in Vermont and raised in Foxboro , Massachusetts . She is of Native American, Irish, Polish, and French ancestry. She grew up in a one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of Boston , in a low-income family.

Her father was a blues singer, while her mother, Diana, sang in a church choir. JoJo's parents divorced when she was 4 years old, and she lived with her mother, moving often. During her early years, JoJo listened and learned as her mother practiced hymns. She started singing when she was two years old by imitating her mother, putting her own spin on everything from nursery rhymes to pop tunes. When JoJo was 6, she tried out for and performed on Kids Say the Darnest Things, impressing host Bill Cosby with her rendition of "Respect." The exposure got JoJo additional appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show and The Rosie O'Donnell Show; she went on to sing at a Celtics game and even at the Republican National Convention.

    JoJo signs with Blackground Records

But JoJo's early fame had its dark side. Even before hitting it big, it was apparent that her schoolmates were jealous of her talent. "You could see very early on that the girls wanted to be like Joanna," said her first-grade teacher, Julia Haney. But when they couldn't, they got mean, especially once she made it on TV.

Adding to JoJo's childhood woes was her family's financial situation. Her mother Diana made a meager living as a cleaning lady, and the two shared a run-down, one-bedroom apartment. JoJo had to make do with reduced-price lunches, hand-me-down clothes, and shopping at Wal-Mart and Kmart.

In 2002, JoJo performed on TV's America's Most Talented Kids competition. She lost, describing the experience as "terrible," but some good came from it. An audience member, impressed with JoJo's performance, introduced her to producer Vincent Herbert. Herbert signed JoJo to a multi-album deal with Blackground Records.

    JoJo releases leave (get out)

In the summer of 2003, JoJo began recording her first album, the self-titled JoJo. Having written three of the 14 songs herself, JoJo found singing in the studio to be a different challenge from singing live. Once JoJo was released in June of 2004, the young singer became an instant star. Her single "Leave (Get Out)" reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top 40 -- making JoJo, at 13, the youngest singer with that distinction. She was also nominated for an MTV Video Music Award as Best New Artist (also the youngest ever), and she beat Britney Spears' record as the youngest singer to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

As her album reached gold status, JoJo toured Europe as the opening act for Usher. She also contributed to the Shark Tale soundtrack, performing the song "Secret Love." She played a young Linda Ronstadt on the television show American Dreams, and is currently in negotiations to make her movie debut in Aquamarine alongside Emma Roberts.

JoJo lives in Edgewater , New Jersey , with her mother, who acts as her manager.

JoJo has also begun a film career, starring in two 2006 Hollywood films: Aquamarine and RV.

Her second album, The High Road, was released on October 17, 2006 .

    JoJo's Personal life

JoJo and her mother reside in New Jersey , and her recording studio is in Manhattan , New York City. JoJo, who has been tutored for the past 3 years, has stated that "school is definitely a big part of my life". She performs well academically, receiving marks in the A's and B's.[9]

JoJo's friends include actresses Sara Paxton and Emma Roberts, whom she befriended on the set of Aquamarine, and actress Alexa Vega.

She dated D.C. United soccer player Freddy Adu from May 14, 2005 to about September of 2006. The two met on the MTV show Fake ID Club while she was hosting it.[10]. JoJo made an appearance in the commentary box at a New England Revolution home game when they were playing D.C. United. Freddy Adu registered an assist in that game.

JoJo stated that she was single on Live with Regis and Kelly, which aired October 18, 2006 . JoJo was also in the October 2006 issue of Teen People magazine confirming her breakup with Freddy Adu: "I'm single right now and it's good. I'm so young. I'm going to be 16 in December and I'm just so busy. It's hard if you also want to date someone who has a high-profile profession; we were just both consumed with our own world...."

JoJo Has CRush On David Beckham

    February 3, 2007

JoJo can't wait for David Beckham to move to the US - but doesn't care about making friends with his wife Victoria.

The 16-year-old singer confessed she has a crush on David who has joined US soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy - but doesn't want to befriend the "old" former Spice Girl.

JoJo told OK! magazine: "I have a big crush on David Beckham - he is such a beautiful man! I'm a big soccer fan, so I think it is great he's coming to Los Angeles.

"But I don't think I'll be getting friendly with Victoria - she's old enough to be my mother, so I don't think we'll have much in common!"

JoJo - real name Joanna Levesque - first stormed the charts with heartbreak anthem 'Leave (Get Out)' when she was just 13.

Her second album 'The High Road' is out now.

JoJo is one of The 16 sweetest stars 16 and under!

    January 31, 2007

Teen pop stars arrive by the dozens, but 16-year-old Joanna Levesque (JoJo for short) has all but bypassed the teenie-bop phase, crafting tunes that can dwell comfortably on both the pop and adult contemporary charts

At 13, Levesque became the youngest solo artist to top Billboard's Mainstream Top 40 chart with her 2004 breakout hit "Leave (Get Out)," which led the chart for five weeks and peaked at No. 12 on the Hot 100. Her self-titled debut, "JoJo," bowed at No. 4 on The Billboard 200 and has sold more than 1.3 million copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The assorted pop, hip-hop, R&B and soul flavors of her latest, this fall's "The High Road" (see review below) hail from a team of contributors that includes producers Scott Storch ("This Time") and Bo Dozier ("Anything") and songwriters Diane Warren (who penned the ballads "Exceptional" and "Note to God") and Sean Garrett (who wrote the Storch and Swizz Beatz tracks).

Branching into film, Levesque recently nabbed roles in this year's "Aquamarine" and "RV" alongside Robin Williams and plans to delay recording her next album until she turns 18.

JoJo took some time out in Manhattan to answer some questions.

Q . What age did you start singing? And what about acting?

A . I started singing at age 2. I started talking and then I started singing. I have been acting since I was 6. I started doing theater in Massachusetts, and then I did commercials.

Q . Did your roles in "Aquamarine" and "RV" have any similarities with your life?

A . A little similar. I try to take a little piece of myself and put it in the roles that I play so I can relate to the character more.

Q . When you went to school did some of the girls just pretend to be your friend?

A . Yes. There are a lot of mean girls, and I was no stranger to that. There were girls who were jealous and got mad at me for no reason. But everybody is good at different things. That is why I never understood why they were jealous.

Q . Is there any one who influenced you and helped you along the way?

A . Definitely. My mom has been so supportive with whatever I wanted to do, like singing, acting or school. She has always been there for me.

Q . Did guys in school suddenly start to like you when you made it?

A . I wasn't in school when I started to get successful, but boys liked me. I think it was because I was just like them and I had a lot of guy friends, and we always hung out together.

Q . What is it like being on the road?

A . It is cool. I love traveling. Being in a tour bus you are in a new city every night, but it is also good to go home.
